  That was very good reading,but there were also coin shortages in the British Isles in the late 18th. Century,plus a period from 1800 right up until 1858 in which tokens were used as currency.

Right... You are missing the section on Conder Tokens, actually... and ironically...

I just read Good Money: Birmingham Button Makers, the Royal Mint, and the Beginnings of Modern Coinage by George Selgin (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2008).  This is an excellent history of the 18th Century Provincal Coinage ("Conder Tokens").  It is lively, detailed and authoritative -- and best of all, Selgin's narratives rely on correct economics.  He really understands markets and marketplaces.  (For a hobby that buys and sells money, we often fall into common intellectual traps, rather than thinking clearly about what we know from the bourse floor and auction room.)  Selgin's research is broad and deep, so his narrative, while entertaining is nonetheless dependable.

In the Preface, Selgin thanks Bill McKivor for help with images.
