In the aftermath of the revolution when the countryside of France was still in turmoil, Austria decided that it would be a good opportunity to take advantage of it. The Austrian army invaded France and laid siege to the town of Lille. After eight days of continuous bombardment, the townspeople refused to surrender so the Ausrian army packed up and went back home. In 1845, the Column of the Goddess was erected in the town square to honor the townspeople who refused to capitulate.
This is the smallest medal in my collection at 26mm. Actually, it is properly called a jeton because it is less than 38mm.
