Slabbing Your Own Coins

To protect my investment, I slab some of my choice coins. First, I buy slabs with holes that are equal (nearly impossible) or slightly smaller than the specimen that I'm going to encase. Next, I use a long round file (not flat edged) to widen the existing hole to the same diameter as the coin. It may take several tries before getting the right diameter. When finished, use a fine rasp file to smooth over the rough edges inside the hole. Next, seat the coin in the modified hole. The fit should be snug not loose. If necessary, take a clean soft cloth and gently wipe off any smudges on the coin that may be left behind. Lastly, place the slab frame inside the cover plates, and lock the two ends together to seal the coin. If desired, you can use a word processor or printing software to make sticker labels to place on the slab frame to document the coin.
