Frankly, Aidan, you could use a nice digital camera for imaging your coins.

For notes, scanners are fine.  And better results with coins are also possible using scanners.  : )

Larry,
  I haven't got a digital camera,but I do use my flat-bed scanner though.

The background is just a sheet of black paper to make it easier for both banknotes & coins to stand out,as it is hard to crop photos of notes with white backgrounds when they have been put straight on the glass plate.
