In 1986, Liberty, as depicted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, was selected as the design that would grace the obverse of the American Eagle Gold Coins. The Saint-Gaudens design first appeared on the United States' $20, or double-eagle, gold piece in 1907, where it remained until 1933. Like their gold counterparts, American Eagle Silver Coins have been produced and sold in both proof and bullion finishes since 1986. They have always featured a rendition of sculptor Adolph A. Weinman's magnificent Walking Liberty design, originally prepared and executed for the Nation’s first circulating half-dollar coin in 1916.

American Eagle Proof and Uncirculated Coins for Collectors

The United States Mint produces proof versions of American Eagle Bullion coins for collectors.  American Eagle Proof Coins undergo a specialized minting process, which begins by manually feeding burnished coin blanks into presses fitted with special dies. The coin is struck multiple times so the softly frosted, yet detailed images seem to float above a mirror-like field. After scrutiny by white gloved inspectors, each American Eagle Gold and Silver Proof Coin is sealed in a protective plastic capsule and mounted in a handsome satin-lined velvet presentation case with its own official Certificate of Authenticity.  American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins are packaged in a custom-designed portfolio presentation case.  Since American Eagle Proof Coins are produced by the United States Mint, each coin's content, weight and purity are guaranteed by the United States Government. American Eagle Gold, Silver, and Platinum Proof Coins have a limited mintage and can be purchased directly from the United States Mint.

In 2006, the United States Mint added another member to the American Eagle family of precious metal coins.  Collectors may purchase American Eagle Uncirculated Coins in silver and gold directly from the United States Mint.

In a process similar to that used to create the magnificent American Eagle Proof Coins, American Eagle Uncirculated Coins are hand-loaded into the coining press, struck on specially burnished blanks and carry the "W" mint mark of the United States Mint at West Point.



Silver Eagle Mintage

The table below displays the mintage figures for American Silver Eagle coins. This includes bullion versions of the coin in the first column, proof versions in the second column, and the collectible uncirculated versions in the third column.
These mintages represent the final adjusted sales figures provided by the United States Mint. For numbers marked with an asterisk (*), refer to the mintage notes following the table.
The key date for the series has remained the elusive 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle. This is now followed by the 2011-P Reverse Proof and 2011-S Uncirculated Silver Eagles, which were both limited to 100,000. The highest mintage proof year was the inaugural year of 1986.
The lowest mintage for a bullion coin is the 1996 Silver Eagle, at 3,603,386. The highest mintage bullion year is 2011, with sales reaching an astounding 40,020,000 coins and achieving a third consecutive annual record.

Gold Eagle Mintages


The tables below present American Gold Eagle coin mintages across all options. The tables includes all denominations and various versions that have been offered since the series was launched in 1986.

In the case of collectible coins, the mintages listed are generally composed of individual coins sales plus any sales made through multiple coin sets. In most years, four coin sets were offered which included one coin of each denomination, although in some years, different sets were offered. For any years marked with an asterisk (*), refer to the notes at the bottom of the page.

The lowest mintage coin across all options is the 2011-W $50 Uncirculated Gold Eagle. This collectible uncirculated coin had a final mintage of 8,822.

The highest mintage coin was the 1999 $5 American Gold Eagle. This one-tenth ounce bullion coin had a mintage of 2,750,338. It was in high demand amidst a surge in precious metals demand ahead of Y2K.

Notes:

1986 – Fractional coins were not offered in proof version.

1987 – The 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce fractional coins were not offered in proof version. The US Mint offered a two coin set containing the one ounce and 1/2 ounce proof coins.

1993 - The Philadelphia Set was offered which included proof 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/10 ounce coins. A total of 12,689 units were sold and have been reflected in the component figures.

1995 - The 10th Anniversary Five Coin Set was offered in addition to the usual Four Coin Set. A total of 30,102 of the Five Coin Sets were sold and have been reflect in the component figures.

1997 – The Impressions of Liberty Set was offered which included the proof one ounce Gold Eagle. A total of 4,965 sets were sold and have been reflected in the component figure.

2006 – The 20th Anniversary Gold Eagle Set included the one ounce proof Gold Eagle and one ounce uncirculated Gold Eagle. A total of 9,996 sets were sold. The 20th Anniversary Gold and Silver Eagle Set included the one ounce uncirculated Gold Eagle. A total of 19,145 sets were sold. These amounts have been added to the component totals.

2008 – The Double Prosperity Set included the 1/2 ounce Uncircualted Gold Eagle. A total of 7,622 sets were sold. This amount has been added to the component total.

2009 – Collectible proof and uncirculated Gold Eagles were not issued this year.

2010 - Figures for proof coins represent last reported sales. Final audited mintages not yet available. The collectible uncirculated version was not issued.

2011 – Figure for uncirculated coin represents last reported sales. Final audited mintage not yet available.
