Catherine the Great - 5 KOPEKS Russian copper
« on: October 06, 2010, 08:28:40 PM »
The Russian empress Catherine II, known as Catherine the Great, reigned from 1762 to 1796. Under her direct auspices the Russian Empire expanded, improved in its administration, and underwent a dramatic policy of Westernization. Catherine's rule revitalized Russia which grew strong and rivaled the great powers of Europe and Asia. Her astonishing abilities within the realms of complex foreign policy and sometimes brutal reprisals in the light of rebellion complemented her hectic private life. She frequently leaned towards scandal given her enlightened propensity for relationships with daring figures which often resulted in gossip flourishing within more than one European court. She took power after a conspiracy deposed her husband, Peter III (1728–1762), and her reign saw the high point of the Russian nobility. This huge copper Five Kopeks piece weighs 51.1 grams and is affectionately referred to within numismatic circles as a “manhole cover.”
I am not sure how to link to a site on these boards but here is a great site to help explain these beautiful Russian coppers
http://www.russiannumismaticsociety.org/learn5kop.htm
Here is a nice high grade example that is soaking in oil to clean up that verdigris.

Hey 'JRocco', welcome aboard. That has to be one of the finest examples that I've seen for this denomination. Thanks for posting it. Here are a few copper pieces from my collection although not as sharply detailed as yours.

Hey guys,
These large copper are something in hand and every one is unique in its own way.
I have always wondered about all the different mints listed as making these coins.
I had a tough time finding any minted outside the Ekaterinburg Mint - EM
I was able to find a 1789 minted at the Anninsk Mint - AM though
Let me post my 89 EM along with the 89 AM for comp.

Nice ones. Here's another one I got today. This is a Polushka from SIBERIA dated 1774, Siberian coins were minted in Kolyvan (KM).

There are some very nice coins in this thread.
This one is at least  double struck, has a re-punched date with a die clash thrown in to boot.
I love interesting coins.

Those are very nice Czarist Russian & Siberian coins of Czarina Catherine II the Great.

How does one tell the difference between the real coins & the Novodels?

Aidan.

Hi Aiden,
Though not always true with all, many of the Russian novadels are edge stamped with their date of manufacture.
Otherwise it is always good to know the usual or normal condition and surface texture of the original pieces. For
example, if a coin usually is seen with a matte or satin finish and you come across a piece that  hits that question button in
your head and has nice proof like surfaces...beware.

Let me add another piece to this thread that I really like.
And it carries a very nice date as well as a nice restruck date.
